How We Can Help Your Dialysis Experience

If you’ve been told you need dialysis, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. At Merit Health Care, P.C., in Sylacauga and Talladega, Alabama, Ghayas Habach, MD, MPH, and our team are here to support you every step of the way with compassionate care, flexible options, and expert guidance that makes your dialysis experience comfortable and manageable.
Here’s how we help make a challenging time feel a little easier.
Understanding your options
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for those with end-stage kidney failure. When your kidneys can no longer filter waste and excess fluid from your body, dialysis steps in to do the job. We offer three main types of dialysis so you can choose the one that fits your lifestyle best:
Hemodialysis (in-center or home-based)
Hemodialysis uses a dialysis machine (often called an artificial kidney) to clean your blood. It involves a minor procedure to create a vascular access point in your arm and is typically done three times a week for about four hours per session. For added flexibility, home hemodialysis is also an option.
Peritoneal dialysis (mostly home-based)
Peritoneal dialysis involves placing a catheter into your abdomen to filter blood through the peritoneal cavity. It’s often done 3-5 times per week at home and typically offers more freedom and fewer dietary restrictions than hemodialysis.
Personalized education and training
Starting dialysis doesn’t mean you’re on your own. Whether you’re receiving treatment at one of our clinics or managing it from home, we teach you everything you need to know.
In-center dialysis
In-center dialysis lets you receive all your treatments under the supervision of trained staff. Your health is closely monitored, your care is adjusted as needed, and you have a safe, supportive space to ask questions and share concerns.
Home dialysis
With home dialysis, we train you to safely use your equipment. We show you how to keep your access site clean to minimize infection risk and provide ongoing support by phone or telehealth whenever you need help.
Continuous care and monitoring
Dialysis is a lifelong commitment for many, and we take that responsibility seriously. We don’t just focus on your treatment; we focus on you as a whole person. Here’s how we stay connected to your ongoing health:
- Regular check-ins to monitor lab results and symptoms
- Adjustments to your treatment plan based on how your body responds

- Coordination with transplant teams if you’re a candidate
